LOW VIZ BIZ #5 — SUMMER 1999

Our Low Vision Club Expo was a heartwarming experience and a great success. The Task Force worked hard, and we owe special thanks to Bob Hobson for coordinating the event and to Dallas Fees for his work on publicity. And thanks to all of you for attending and for your suggestions for next year. Yes, we are already thinking about next year. We have 42 new members from the Expo. I did not expect that! Welcome!

We had 109 people at the picnic. I hope you were there because we had a good time! We had good food, lovely weather, great company. Jerry Courtney and her crew made it all happen. Jerry’s husband, Rock (our transportation chairman), proved he is multi-talented by cooking the brisket and sausage.

Isn’t our new meeting location in the Allied Health Building great? I hope you arrived in time for refreshments in the lounge area before the meeting. Doctors Brown, Kiel and Sponsel inaugurated our new meeting room with an information-filled program. We had record-breaking attendance.

Now on to COMING ATTRACTIONS

Programs
July 17-- Role Models—4 club members describe how they met the challenges of vision loss.
August 21 – Visit the San Antonio Lighthouse—Learn about computer training and braille programs. Buy vision aids at the store.
September 18 – Discussion Topic, Self Esteem

Remember……if you need a ride to a club meeting, call Rock Courtney at 734-4708 A WEEK BEFORE THE MEETING. He must have this much time to organize the transportation needs of our group. He will NOT be able to accept requests for transportation during the week of the meeting.

The Low Vision Club is applying for 501.c non-profit status. This will take several months to complete, but the time has come when we need funding to help with the growing expenses of paperwork involved in keeping the membership records, and communicating with you as needed. If you are familiar with a good funding source, please call Bonnie Truax at 344-1479.
We would like to express our thanks to the Taute Trust for providing the funds needed to file our application.

HEALTH FAIRS

Thanks to Terry Casarez and her crew. They already have represented us at two health fairs this summer. We have another one coming up October 9, The CTRC/KMOL Run for Life. MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THE HEALTH FAIR PROJECT. You get a chance to meet interesting people and talk about the Low Vision Club. Call Terry at 435-7617 if you can help.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

If you have a ViaTrans card, you received the audio tape that listed places (other than ViaTrans) that offer transportation. Marian Harrell called this list for us and found one group you need to know about. Supportive Services for the Elderly offers transportation not limited to doctor appointments or grocery shopping. They do not charge for this service, but you must be 60 years or older and live in Bexar county. Call 226-9212. Club member Dave Gillman has used this service and reports they do accept donations.

Here is a good reason to get acquainted with a computer. Tim and Evelyn Gutierrez have a new web page. The address is: http://www.texastrend.com/lowvision.html.

Long-time members will remember Laverne Saphore who moved to Pennsylvania. He reports a very active support group there. He also has joined another square dance club…they call themselves the No See Do’s. His address is 510 Bonnymeade Avenue, Harrisburg, Pa. 17111. Telephone 717-564-2031.

TIME FOR A SMILE…

Her husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet his faithful wife stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him he said, “You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health started failing, you were still by my side. You know what? “
“What, Dear?” she asked gently.   “I think you’re bad luck!”

Do you know about the Warm Springs Resource Center for People with Disabilities? They offer classes in computers and many other interesting things. They are located at 5101 Medical Drive and their telephone number is 595-9200. Call and ask for a schedule of classes. They will be offering transportation.

OUR SHOPPERS REPORT

Mary Moser found a wonderful lighted makeup (or shaving) mirror at Walgreens. It is called a Deluxe Halo lighted mirror 3X.
Ann Baker really likes the lamp she found at Office Depot. It is a Dana, Function First Collection, Series 2000, with 75 watt bulb.
Someone told me about watches from Wallmart. We have some eagle eye shoppers out there!

Most of you will remember Mildred Baber won the CCTV at our Christmas party. Mildred’s daughter was transferred to Dallas so she will no longer be able to attend our meetings. Mildred has written me that when she can no longer use the CCTV, it is to go back to the Low Vision Club in San Antonio. She feels there will be someone else in the club who can use it at that time. What a thoughtful thing to do! Mildred plans to look for a support group in Dallas and volunteer at the Dallas Lighthouse as she did here. We wish her well.

TODAY-a thoughtful poem submitted by Robert C. Hill

Outside my window, a new day I see,
And only I can determine what kind of day it will be.
It can be busy and sunny, laughing and gay,
Or boring and cold, unhappy and grey.
My own state of mind is the determining key,
For I am only the person I let myself be.
I can be thoughtful and do all I can to help,
Or be selfish and think just of myself.
I can enjoy what I do and make it seem fun,
Or gripe and complain and make it hard on someone.
I can be patient with those who may not understand,
Or belittle and hurt them as much as I can.
But I have faith in myself, and believe what I say,
And personally intend to make the best of each day.
