NOW,
it is time to party! On Saturday, May 27, our fourth annual picnic is going to
be another winner. We will join Blinded Veterans Association members to
socialize, eat a wonderful barbecue dinner, listen to music, and dance. You
won’t want to miss this one! The
picnic will be hosted by the Low Vision Club’s NW Satellite Support Group and
its leader, Pegi Gonzalez. Cost for the barbecue dinner is $5 per person.
Pegi will be at our April meeting
to take your reservations and checks. Or you may send your checks payable to the
Low Vision Club to Pegi Gonzalez, 13703 Cedar Canyon, San Antonio, TX 78231.
This must be done before May 10. We will not be able to accept reservations
after that date, as we must order the food at that time. (Also please include
your telephone number in case we have questions and need to call you). Your
check is your reservation for the picnic. The
picnic will be held in the Henry B. Gonzalez pavilion at Mission County Park,
6030 Padre Drive, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will serve the dinner at 11:30 a.m.
For more information, call Pegi at 493-9272. We have many new members,
and this will be a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other.

17—Meeting and program will be at Warm Springs Resource Center. You won’t
want to miss this opportunity to see this center and get to know their programs.
We also will find out about their expanded transportation program.
LVC RESOURCE GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE One of the most valuable tools ever to be provided to club members became available in January with publication of the LVC Resource Guide. It contains a lot of helpful information. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to
volunteer Shirley Lehman who spent the better part of a year working with Bonnie
Truax in
preparing the 55-page guide. It’s hard to even estimate the number of hours
she and her husband devoted to this project. Also special recognition is due the
San Antonio Lighthouse and William Judson Center for publishing the material. LVC
members who have not already done so may pick up a copy at the registration
table at the April meeting. Copies also have been distributed to San Antonio
area ophthalmologists.
EXPO 2000 GREAT SUCCESS March
18th was a red letter day in LVC history when the club presented its
Second Annual Low Vision Expo at the UT Health Science Center’s Allied Health
& McDermott buildings. Many thanks are due Low Vision Club members, Task
Force representatives and other volunteers for their hard work. Attendance
totaled more than 450, including the general public. Three
separate areas contained exhibits from 40 vendors and agency representatives,
displaying various low vision aids and answering questions on assistance. Winner of the Talking Scale raffle prize was LVC member Mary Jane Marazzini. Door prizes were won by Marjorie Holiday, Betty Roddy, Yolanda Aguirre, Edith Kroschel, Art Moser, Mac Pena, Virginia Brown, Doe Holliman, Manny Gonzalez, Jo Sugg and Jerry Courtney.
MEMORIALS AND DONATIONS Our club has received several checks as donations and as memorials to loved ones and friends who have passed away. Memorials
to Viola N. Kramer and Alvin Otto Schulze were received from John Powell.
Memorials to Gus Pickett, Tom Turbake and Si Helmos
were received from Louise Sayger. Special
donation checks were received from
Franklin Hawkinson, Robert Gibson, Lilli Wiechert, Cleo Carranza, Delores
Garrett, Harvey Cox, Doe Hollimon and the Select Employees Federal Credit Union.
Such gifts are greatly appreciated and enable us to do more things to benefit
our members.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with a class of six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “honor thy father and thy mother,” she asked, “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, “Thou shalt not kill.”
LARGE SCREEN KILLER WHALE SHOW John Connors reports that Sea World has started a new show at their Killer Whale Stadium that combines live action above and below the water with close-ups on a giant two-story-high video screen. He said it really helped Joan see the show and may do the same for other members of our club.
