Judging from attendance and the many favorable comments received, our October free public seminar, "Living With Macular Disease", was a tremendous hit. If you missed it, and would like to know what was said, you can order an audio cassette tape for $5 by calling 567-8419. Our next meeting on Saturday, Nov. 18, will give you a chance to discuss your thoughts with Moderator Leslie Hoy. We'll talk about how to prepare for a visit to your ophthalmologist and low vision specialist. How to decide if you should participate in a clinical trial or study, and many other subjects. (Note: At future club meetings, please do not bring food or drinks into the auditorium. We must keep all refreshments in the outer lobby only.) And plan to attend our club's big Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 16. Once again, we are privileged to be able to use the dining hall at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church, 227 West Woodlawn Avenue at Belknap. Party time is 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We will serve a catered lunch at 12:30 p.m. consisting of turkey or sliced ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, string beans, etc. Cost is $5 per person payable in advance. Send checks payable to "Low Vision Club"(no cash, please) to Josefina H. Miller, 11426 Hollow Tree, San Antonio, TX 78230, or register at the club's November 18 meeting. No registration payments can be accepted after November 25. For further information, call Josefina at 690-4772. Hope. Help. Independence. Be sure you look over the new Low Vision Club membership brochure enclosed with this issue of the newsletter. We now have a first class way of telling our story, including our goals, our history, and our offer of support and assistance when vision fails. We are indebted to many wonderful people who donated their services on this project including Janet Bye, creator and copywriter, and Jeffrey Heinke, artistic genius. And it might never have been printed without our usual help from Gene Brenner of Brenner Printing. We hope to have copies available in doctors' offices, and wherever else we can reach people who may need our help. Have You Seen Our Web Site? Thanks to Terry Ordway, the Low Vision Club now has its own Web Site on the Internet. You can access it at www.lowvisionclub.com. The site contains the goals and history of the club, past issues of our newsletters, news about our bowling league and special stories about or by some of our members. There also are links to other related organizations, etc. Check it out. We hope to keep you updated on all our activities. Newsletter On Audio Cassette Starting with this issue, we hope to provide audio cassettes of our newsletters to those of you who have requested tapes. For this to work, we need to have you bring us your old audio cassettes which we can erase and re-record. Please turn them in at the registration table when you come to our monthly meetings. Also, if you desire a cassette and have not been contacted about it, please inform the registration table and we will add your name to our list. Memorials and Donations Donations to the club as memorials to loved ones and friends who have passed away are greatly appreciated and help finance the activities of our club. Our most recent contributions came from Dallas Fees in memory of Robert West and Steve Shirey, and from Bonnie Truax in memory of Nancy Nelson, Jack Maguire and John McGiffert. This is a most thoughtful way to honor those we love and respect. Other major donations were received from Doris Martensen, Steven Webb, and the Central Park Lions Club. Important Web Site on Macular Degeneration Club member John Connors has found a site on the web with answers to many questions about Macular Degeneration.
