LOW VIZ BIZ #15 — WINTER 2002

RADIO READING SERVICE

After more than a year of committee meetings, hundreds of hours on the telephone, many letters, and numerous trips here and there, the San Antonio Low Vision Club's Radio Reading Service is expected to start in mid-February. The project has been spearheaded by club president Bonnie Truax and volunteer chairperson Sally Wiskemann. Assisting them is a committee including club members Bob Hobson, John Connors, Paul Hanley, Larry Johnson, Jo and Dave Sugg, plus volunteers Crystal Darby, Bill Gallagher and the top staff at Public Radio Station KSTX (Joe Gwathmey, president; Wayne Coble, technical director; and Penny Dennis, program director).

The radio broadcasts will be carried over a sub-channel of KSTX for reception on special receivers dedicated only to that channel. Equipment for the broadcasts was funded by the Lions Clubs of District 2-A2. Studios at 1250 N.E. Loop 410 were located through the help of JAG Capital Management.

Volunteer readers are now being recruited to read local and regional news. Programs will be carried for two hours every morning, seven days a week. Eventually the club expects to provide programming 24 hours each day.

Application forms for the special radio receivers were mailed to club members in November. Those who applied will be notified when to expect receipt of the equipment. The VA also will be providing receivers for their people.

We will continue to offer receivers to club members, and In the near future accept applications from other qualified print-impaired individuals.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."..Gandhi

WHAT A PARTY!

Our largest party ever-140 people-celebrated Christmas for the 5th time at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church on Dec, 8th. And thanks to our Special Events Committee headed by Josefina Miller, the party was outstanding. Assisting her on the committee were Jean Paletta, Gloria Miranda, Irma Claudio, Pegi Gonzalez, Bobbie McCrary, Adela Aguilar, Ed Brown and James Harris plus many other volunteers. Can you believe we distributed more than 125 door prizes? A two-page list of the many donors was given to each person at the party.

MEMORIALS AND DONATIONS

Cash donations to the club were received this quarter from Dorothy Holliman, Mrs. Chrissy Anthony, Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Catalani, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Paletta, and Geraldine Stallman. Several memorials were also made by Margaret and Dallas Fees. These gifts help finance the activities of the club and are greatly appreciated.

THE AAABC OF STRESS MANAGEMENT

Taken from Leslie Hoy's November LVC Club presentation.

A Avoid - avoid the situation if possible and realistic.

A Alter - change it is some way to make it less stressful.

A Adapt - especially when you can't do either of the above. This is a beneficial option, and you can adapt by

"B" - building resistance through good diet, exercise and using positive self-talk, and by

"C" -changing the way you perceive the situation or yourself.

QUICK NOTES

As the club's membership grows, we find we need more and more drivers to transport members to club meetings. If you know someone who is willing to volunteer as a driver for our club, call Bonnie at 344-1479 and he or she will be contacted.

JOKE

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human being. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven. I will ask Jonah." The teacher asked, "Well what if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl replied, "Then you ask him!"
