LOW VIZ BIZ #20 — SPRING 2003

WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!

What a Valentine we gave on Feb. 15th to our more than 200 volunteers serving in various capacities for the club and our Radio Reading Service. We couldn’t operate without them, and this special salute was in their honor. President Bonnie Truax spent almost 90 minutes naming and telling what each volunteer had done. All were presented with special volunteer ribbons and distinctive pins recognizing their service to the club, and their names were listed in a special printed program for the event.

EXPO 2003 SETS NEW RECORD

Attendance at our Fifth Annual Expo March 8th exceeded 600 persons…a new record. This annual opportunity to see the latest in low vision aids and to explore community resources also produced information requests from 60 prospective new members.

CONTINUED GROWTH

The Low Vision Club added 171 new members during 2002, and 39 additional persons in the first two months of this year. That brings our total membership to almost 700, and dictates the need for a review of continued interest in the club. Members whose recent attendance is down will be contacted to see if they wish to continue as members or be removed from the mailing list.

NEWSLETTER VOICE PASSES AWAY

Members who receive this newsletter on cassette tape will miss the familiar voice of Ken Jones, long time volunteer reader for our club, who passed away in March. We shall miss him very much.

A limited number will be available at regular club meetings.
CD’S ON EYE DISEASES--George Jennings, one of RRS readers and a former on-air personality at WOAI Radio, has produced three separate compact disks on Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Glaucoma. Each disk features an interview about the disease with staff personnel at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. George is selling these at $3 each, and will donate $1.15 from each sale to the Low Vision Club. To order, write George Jennings at 6317 Eastwind, San Antonio, TX 78247.

LIBRARY OF TAPED BOOKS--Club member Ed Brown has cataloged some 78 books on cassette tapes donated to the club and which play on regular cassettes. If you wish to borrow one from our library, call Ed at 735-1802 and he will be happy to go over the list of tapes with you. He also sits at a table near the registration check-in table at our regular club meetings. Ed also is the one to call if you wish to receive this newsletter on cassette tape rather than large print.

INFORMATION RESOURCES--At regular club meetings, stop by the table in the lobby where Arlene Gomez, our volunteer information resource specialist, has on hand such things as brochures, catalogs, and other useful information for club members. If you need assistance locating information, see Arlene at the meetings.

RRS FUND RAISING DRIVE CONTINUES

The first phase of the club’s fund raising drive secured enough matching funds for the Kronkosky Foundation to release a partial payment of their grant to be paid over the next two years. However, the need for more matching funds remains if we are to expand the Radio Reading Service. Any support you give will be appreciated.

BONNIE HONORED AS ONE OF 100 VOICES

Charming Shoppe's, parent company of Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherines stores, has selected Bonnie as one of 100 women in the United States who raised their voices to make a difference in their communities. She will be honored at a gala awards weekend in Houston on May 17-18. Bonnie was chosen from a pool of nearly 3,000 women nominated for the award.
