Help Choose Our Future Programs
Club President Bonnie Truax needs help in selecting future programs. Please
let her know what program or type of program would be most beneficial for you. Write her at 11510 Sandman Drive, San Antonio, TX 78216. All programs are
intended to be educational and helpful to LVC members. Here is your opportunity
to participate in their selection.
LVC Items and Tapes
Don’t forget the LVC has many helpful items in the refreshment area of the
Children’s Cancer Research Institute at our monthly meetings.
Cindy Garcia and Elia Pardo, our club’s volunteer information resource
specialists, have a number of free items on display. Also club member Ed Brown
has cataloged our library of 341 taped books which play on regular cassettes. Stop by his table and he will go over the list with you.
Protect Your Eyes From The Sun
Summer is here and everyone needs to protect his or her eyes from damage by
the sun. You should wear sunglasses every day, even if it’s cloudy. The sun’s
damaging rays can pass through the clouds and haze. Choose sunglasses that
guarantee to block 99% to 100% of Ultra Violet rays. (The darkness of the lens
is no indication of the amount of UV protection provided by the sunglasses).
Activities Of Your Low Vision Club
Potential new members frequently ask what the club does. Here’s what you can
tell them we do.
Monthly meetings providing a variety of information to help members
with their problems and concerns, as well as an opportunity for social
exchanges. You are not alone!
A quarterly newsletter highlighting club and community activities, and
other useful information.
A community resource guide of local support and assistance.
An annual Low Vision Expo showcasing the latest technology, adaptive
devices and resources for the visually impaired.
A bowling league which participates twice a month at a local bowling
alley.
A game day social where members play Scrabble, domino games and card
games with a break for lunch.
Participation in community health fairs.
A free library of books on tape.
Free informational materials available at meetings.
Publication of a “Caregivers Guide”.
Collaboration with Oasis Seniors Program to provide training in low
vision challenges to its peer support volunteers.
A radio reading service (Owl Radio) that provides audio access to
timely local and national news and information usually found in printed
formats through programming on sub-carrier channels of Texas Public Radio.
Maintains websites for both the club and the radio reading service (www.lowvisionclub.com and
www.owlradio.org).
Holds an annual volunteer appreciation party for over 200 volunteers
who work for the Low Vision Club and Owl Radio.
And the best part of all, we do not charge dues, but donations are
appreciated.
Please notify us if you move or change telephones
Every month the post office returns a number of LVC meeting fliers from
people who have moved. Also our callers can’t find people who have changed their
telephone numbers. When changes occur, please call Bonnie Truax at 344-1479. We
want to stay in touch. Thanks.
